Kodak VISION3 50D

Kodak VISION3 50D is the Super 8 film to reach for when you've got plenty of light and want to squeeze as much detail as possible out of the format.

Rated at EI 50 and balanced for daylight, it's made for sunny days, travel, landscapes, outdoor portraits and anything else you're filming in good natural light. Its exceptionally fine grain helps keep Super 8 footage clean and detailed, while Kodak's VISION3 technology gives you plenty of latitude in highlights and shadows.

Each cartridge contains 50 feet / 15 metres of film, giving you roughly three minutes of footage depending on your camera's frame rate.

Load the cartridge, shoot it, then send it for ECN-2 processing and scanning. It's proper motion-picture film in one of the easiest analogue movie formats to use.

What to expect

Expect fine grain, strong detail, natural colour and plenty of latitude, particularly when you're shooting in bright daylight.

50D is the slowest of Kodak's current VISION3 Super 8 stocks. The lower speed means it needs considerably more light than 200T or 500T, but in return you get exceptionally fine grain and excellent image quality.

Kodak rates it at EI 50 under 5500K daylight. Under tungsten lighting with an 80A conversion filter, the effective rating is EI 12.

A standard 50-foot Super 8 cartridge provides approximately 3 minutes 20 seconds at 18 fps, or around 2 minutes 30 seconds at 24 fps.

Developing

ECN-2 motion picture processing.

Kodak VISION3 50D is a professional colour negative motion-picture film and should be processed using ECN-2 chemistry.

Unlike C-41 still film, VISION3 retains its remjet backing, so it should go to a lab equipped to process motion-picture film.

For Super 8, processing is only part of the workflow. You'll normally also need the developed film scanned to a digital file if you want to edit, share or view the footage digitally.
