Leica Leitz Summilux 35mm f/1.4
There's a reason the 35mm lens has become such a familiar companion to photographers over the years.
It's wide enough to tell a story, but close enough to make the details matter.
The Leitz Summilux 35mm f/1.4 is a classic example of that balance.
Designed for Leica's M rangefinder system, this compact wide-angle lens brings together an everyday focal length with a particularly generous f/1.4 maximum aperture.
That makes it a lovely choice for photographing people, streets, travel and the little moments that happen between everything else.
The 35mm perspective gives you room to include your surroundings without making the scene feel overly wide. It's particularly useful for documentary photography, where the relationship between a person and their environment can be just as important as the subject itself.
Open the aperture to f/1.4 and you have more flexibility when the light begins to fade, along with the option to create a softer background around your subject.
As an earlier Summilux design, it also offers the kind of optical character that has made vintage Leica lenses so interesting to photographers. Rather than chasing a perfectly clinical result, it has a rendering that can feel softer and more atmospheric at wider apertures.
The manual focusing ring, engraved distance scale and traditional aperture controls make the whole experience wonderfully hands-on.
And despite its fast aperture, the lens remains relatively compact, making it an appealing choice for a camera you want to carry throughout the day.
Finished in black, this vintage Summilux is as much about the experience of photography as the finished image.
A lovely everyday lens for anyone who enjoys traditional rangefinder photography, particularly those drawn to the character of older Leitz glass.

What to expect
The 35mm focal length offers a natural-feeling wide-angle perspective, allowing you to include more of the scene without the exaggerated look of an ultra-wide lens.
The fast f/1.4 maximum aperture makes it useful for working in lower light and gives you more control over depth of field.
Earlier Summilux lenses can produce a softer, more atmospheric look at wider apertures, with contrast and sharpness generally improving as the aperture is stopped down.
Focusing is entirely manual.
On compatible Leica M cameras, the lens couples to the camera's rangefinder to assist with accurate focusing.
The engraved distance and depth-of-field markings also make it possible to work with preset focus distances, particularly useful for street photography.
At f/1.4, careful focusing is important, especially when photographing subjects at closer distances.
Compatibility with individual digital cameras and adapters should be checked before purchasing.
Developing
This lens can be used for film photography when mounted on a compatible Leica M film camera.
The developing process depends on the film being used rather than the lens itself.
For example, 35mm colour negative film is generally processed using C-41 chemistry, while black and white and slide films require their respective processes.
When used on a compatible digital camera, no film developing is required.
