Fujifilm X half
The Fujifilm X half is a digital camera with a little bit of film photography in its soul.
Inspired by the experience of shooting half-frame film, it takes a refreshingly different approach to digital photography. Rather than encouraging you to take hundreds of photographs and sort through them later, the X half is designed to make each frame feel a little more considered.
Its compact body, optical viewfinder and physical controls give it the familiar feel of a traditional camera, while the digital sensor means you can enjoy the experience without needing to buy or develop film.
The fixed 32mm-equivalent lens is a lovely everyday focal length. Wide enough for street scenes, travel and photographs of friends, but still natural enough for the little moments happening around you.
One of the nicest features is Film Camera Mode. Choose a Film Simulation, set your number of frames and shoot as though you've loaded a roll of film. You won't see the finished photographs until you've completed the roll and transferred it through Fujifilm's dedicated app.
There's also a playful 2-in-1 mode, letting you pair two images together in a single composition, much like displaying two half-frame photographs side by side.
And of course, Fujifilm's Film Simulations give you plenty of room to explore different colours, contrast and photographic moods.
The X half isn't trying to replace a traditional interchangeable-lens camera. It's about making photography enjoyable in a different way.
A small, beautifully considered camera for everyday adventures, creative experiments and anyone who loves the feeling of shooting film but appreciates the convenience of digital.
Best for
Street photography, travel, everyday moments, creative portraits, visual storytelling, film photography enthusiasts and anyone looking for a compact digital camera with a more hands-on shooting experience.
What to expect
The Fujifilm X half is built around a vertical shooting experience.
Its 3:4 image format is inspired by half-frame film photography, making it particularly enjoyable for portraits, street scenes and documenting everyday life.
The fixed 32mm-equivalent lens means there's no optical zoom or interchangeable lens system. Instead, you move around your subject and work with what's in front of you.
Film Camera Mode is one of the X half's most distinctive features. It recreates some of the anticipation of shooting film by encouraging you to finish a virtual roll before reviewing your photographs through the dedicated app.
For everyday shooting, you can also use the camera more like a conventional digital compact, with the convenience of a rear display and Fujifilm's colour settings.
Although its design takes inspiration from analogue photography, the X half is entirely digital and does not use 35mm film.
Developing
No film developing required.
The Fujifilm X half captures photographs digitally.
In Film Camera Mode, the camera recreates the experience of finishing a roll of film and reviewing the results afterwards through the companion app. This is a digital process, not chemical film development.
