Kodak EKTACHROME 100D Super 8
Kodak EKTACHROME 100D is Super 8 with a difference. Instead of producing a colour negative, it creates a positive colour image directly on the film.
Rated at EI 100 and balanced for daylight, it's made for bright conditions where its fine grain, sharp detail and rich colour can really shine. Landscapes, travel, outdoor portraits and sunny-day filmmaking are all right at home here.
Because it's reversal film, the developed strip is the finished positive image. Hold it up to the light and you're looking directly at the colours you captured, rather than the orange negative you get from Kodak's VISION3 stocks.
Each cartridge contains 50 feet / 15 metres of film, giving you around three minutes of footage depending on your shooting frame rate.
Best for
- Super 8 filmmaking
- Daylight shooting
- Travel films
- Landscapes
- Outdoor portraits
- Music videos
- Short films
- Projection
- Archival film projects
- Filmmakers who want a positive image on the original film
What to expect
Expect fine grain, crisp detail, rich colour and more contrast than a colour negative stock.
The biggest difference is that EKTACHROME is reversal film. After processing, the film itself contains a positive colour image that can be viewed directly or projected with compatible equipment.
That also means exposure needs a little more care. Colour reversal film has less exposure latitude than Kodak's VISION3 negative stocks, so getting your exposure right in-camera matters more.
Kodak rates EKTACHROME 100D at EI 100 under 5500K daylight. Under 3200K tungsten lighting, Kodak specifies an 80A filter and EI 25.
Developing
E-6 colour reversal processing.
This is an important distinction from the VISION3 Super 8 films we've just done.
50D, 200T and 500T: ECN-2 colour negative processing
EKTACHROME 100D: E-6 colour reversal processing
Kodak specifies Process E-6 for EKTACHROME 100D 7294.
Once developed, the original film contains the finished positive image. It can be scanned to a digital file for editing and sharing, but unlike negative film, scanning isn't required simply to see a positive image.
