Ilford Delta 400 Professional

Ilford Delta 400 Professional is a versatile black and white film that combines ISO 400 speed with fine grain and plenty of detail.

In 120 format, it's a great all-round choice for medium format photography. There's enough speed to work comfortably in changing light and handheld situations, while the larger negative makes the most of Delta 400's sharpness and relatively fine grain.

It works particularly well for portraits, street photography, documentary work and everyday shooting, especially when you want more flexibility than a slower ISO 100 film without giving up too much detail.

It can also be pushed when the light starts to disappear, making Delta 400 a useful film to keep in the bag when you're not quite sure what the day will bring.

What to expect

Expect fine grain for an ISO 400 film, high sharpness and plenty of detail, with more flexibility in changing light than Delta 100.

At its standard ISO 400 rating, it's an easy film to use across a broad range of situations. Ilford also states that good image quality can be achieved from EI 200 through to EI 3200, with extended development required at the higher exposure indexes.

That makes it a particularly useful middle ground in the Delta range: faster and more flexible than Delta 100, without the pronounced high-speed character of Delta 3200.

Developing

Standard black and white processing.

Delta 400 can be developed in a wide range of black and white developers. For higher exposure indexes, Ilford specifically lists ILFOTEC DD-X, ILFOTEC HC, MICROPHEN and ILFOTEC RT RAPID for extended development.
