Carl Zeiss Tele-Tessar T* 200mm

The Carl Zeiss Tele-Tessar T 200mm f/3.5* is a classic manual-focus telephoto made for the Contax/Yashica (C/Y Mount) 35mm SLR system.

With a true 200mm focal length, this is a lens for when you want some distance between yourself and the subject. It's well suited to portraits from further back, landscapes, details, events and other situations where a standard lens simply won't give you enough reach.

The f/3.5 maximum aperture is relatively bright for a vintage 200mm lens, while the Tele-Tessar optical design keeps the physical length more manageable than a simple long-focus design.

It's a completely manual experience, with a large focusing ring and mechanical aperture control. Zeiss's T multi-coating* is used across the optical system, and a built-in retractable hood gives you some extra protection from stray light without carrying another accessory.

What to expect

At 200mm, you're firmly in telephoto territory. Compared with the 135mm Sonnar, this gives you noticeably more reach and stronger perspective compression.

The f/3.5 maximum aperture gives you useful control over subject separation while still keeping the lens considerably more compact than the very large fast telephotos of the era.

It's also a substantial lens. At around 920g, there's a fair amount of glass and metal here, so it feels very different from a modern lightweight consumer telephoto.

Focusing is entirely manual, and there's no image stabilisation. When adapted to a modern mirrorless camera, features such as focus peaking and magnification can make manual focusing easier, while stabilisation depends on the camera body.
