Canon FD 24mm f/1.4 L
The Canon FD 24mm f/1.4 L is a beautifully made wide-angle lens from Canon's classic manual-focus era.
With its generous 24mm field of view and bright f/1.4 aperture, it's a lens that gives you plenty of room to experiment, whether you're photographing city streets, interiors, landscapes or the everyday moments happening around you.
The wide perspective lets you bring more of the scene into the frame, while the large maximum aperture makes it possible to keep photographing when the light begins to fade.
It's an interesting combination. Wide-angle lenses are often associated with landscapes and architecture, but the f/1.4 aperture also makes this a lovely option for environmental portraits, evening street photography and more atmospheric images.
As part of Canon's L-series range, the 24mm f/1.4 L was designed with particular attention to optical performance. Its specialised glass and aspherical elements help deliver sharpness and contrast while controlling optical imperfections.
There's also something very satisfying about the way it handles.
The manual focusing ring gives you a direct connection to the photograph you're making, encouraging a slower, more considered approach to shooting.
Originally designed for Canon FD film cameras, this lens can also be adapted to compatible modern mirrorless digital cameras, making it an interesting choice for photographers who enjoy working with classic optics.
A wonderful lens for exploring wider compositions, natural light and the character of Canon's early L-series glass.
Best for
Street photography, landscapes, architecture, interiors, environmental portraits, low-light photography, travel, 35mm film photography and adapted mirrorless shooting.
What to expect
The 24mm focal length provides a wide perspective, making it easy to include more of your surroundings in each photograph.
Its f/1.4 maximum aperture is particularly useful in lower light and gives you greater control over depth of field than many slower wide-angle lenses.
Focusing is entirely manual, so you'll need to adjust the focusing ring yourself.
On compatible Canon FD film cameras, the lens offers automatic aperture operation alongside manual focusing.
For digital photography, you'll need a suitable Canon FD adapter and a compatible mirrorless camera. It does not directly mount onto Canon EF or RF cameras.
Developing
When used on a Canon FD film camera, photographs will need to be developed according to the film you choose.
Colour negative film generally uses C-41 processing, while black and white and slide films require their respective processes.
When adapted to a digital mirrorless camera, no film developing is required.
