Canon AE-1 Program
The Canon AE-1 Program is one of those cameras that helped make film photography accessible to a whole generation of photographers.
First introduced in 1981, it combines the satisfying, hands-on experience of a traditional 35mm SLR with automatic exposure options that make it easier to get started.
This particular example comes in the classic black finish, with its familiar Canon styling, straightforward controls and a solid, comfortable feel in the hand.
What makes the AE-1 Program particularly appealing is its flexibility.
If you're just getting started, Program mode can take care of the exposure settings while you concentrate on focusing and composing your photograph. As your confidence grows, you can experiment with shutter-priority and manual exposure, learning how different settings affect your images.
The optical viewfinder lets you see directly through the attached lens, giving you a more connected shooting experience than a simple point and shoot.
And because it uses Canon's FD lens system, there's a wide selection of compatible vintage lenses to explore, from everyday 50mm primes to wide-angle and telephoto options.
This camera is being sold as a body only, so you'll need a compatible Canon FD lens before you can start shooting.
A lovely choice for someone beginning their film photography journey, or an experienced photographer looking for a dependable, classic SLR with plenty of creative control.
Best for
Learning film photography, everyday photography, street photography, portraits, travel, experimenting with manual exposure and building a collection of Canon FD lenses.
What to expect
The Canon AE-1 Program uses standard 35mm film and requires a compatible Canon FD lens.
It's a manual-focus camera, so you'll focus the lens yourself using the viewfinder.
Program mode provides automatic exposure with a compatible lens correctly set for automatic aperture operation, making it easier for beginners to concentrate on their photographs. You can also take greater control through shutter-priority and manual settings.
Unlike a mechanical camera that can operate without power, the AE-1 Program needs a working battery to operate its electronically controlled shutter.
Film advance and rewind are manual, and there's no digital screen or instant image preview.
Developing
The Canon AE-1 Program uses standard 35mm film.
Colour negative film is typically developed using the C-41 process, while traditional black and white film requires black and white processing.
Slide film can also be used and is generally processed using E-6 chemistry.
Once developed, your negatives can be scanned to digital files or used to make photographic prints.
